Cards: These three cards are recent creations.

I painted the first two images during March 2005.   They are two of four illustrations I painted for the Eldritch Expansion of the Call of Cthulhu Collectible Card Game, published by Fantasy Flight Games.  The Eldritch Expansion takes place in 1920's Egypt.  All four of my cards are for the faction called "The Syndicate."  (Exactly what the mob was doing in 1920's Egypt is anybody's guess -- and the subject of many cards. )

I painted the third illustration in June 2005.  It's one of a pair I painted for the Winter Edition of the collectible card game A Game of Thrones, also published by Fantasy Flight Games.

Working with the art directors for each of these projects was a fabulous experience!

Illustrations: Of all of the images on this website, these illustrations reflect the greatest span of time.  I painted the first eight to illustrate a D&D adventure set in the frigid heights of a mountain range.  These date back five years or so, to when I first turned back to art after my disability struck and ended my legal career (see my Bio & Contact page for more details).

I created most of the others I show here in connection with a cartography job I received from DUNGEON Magazine for the adventure called "Fiend's Embrace" in Issue No. 121These are small, digital images that I created as vignettes to surround the "Wolf Nomads & Cold Marshes" map, shown in my Cartography section.  Creating the maps for this adventure was the largest job I have taken on spec, and, once again, working with the art director for DUNGEON was a joy.

Gaming Exhibits: Any roleplaying game is better with interesting exhibits to hand to the players.  These are examples.

Paintings: What on earth are a bunch of portraits and figure paintings doing in the middle of a fantasy/sci-fi/horror illustration website?  Hopefully looking pretty.

As I describe in more detail on my Bio and Contact page, I've been studying art and painting seriously for less than five years. The bulk of that time has not been devoted to illustration, but to more traditional forms of art.  I painted many of the illustrations presented on this website as I was just beginning my studies.  Hence, looking at many of them shows only what I was capable of painting before I began devoting myself to art full time.  In contrast, most these portraits and figure paintings are more recent; they show my improving accuracy and skill as an artist, and the broader range of my palette of colors.

A simple set of examples should suffice to demonstrate my point.    When I first started illustrating, the people I painted looked somewhat cartoon-like, with interesting colors but anatomy that only existed in my imagination -- like these:

Now, the people I paint are far more natural and accurate, like these:

Moreover, I've begun incorporating my better-developed skills into my illustration, even when the setting and tone are decidedly silly, like this recent card illustration:

 &

My hope now is to acquire fantasy and horror illustration projects to which I can devote time and effort equal to or exceeding the time and effort I spent on the fine art portraits and figure paintings I present on this site.
